Below, please find answers to our most frequently asked questions. If you do not find the information you are looking for, please call us at 877-210-3142 or if you prefer email info@wholelifepet.com. We are here to help.

What do you mean by “species appropriate?”

There are thousands of natural treat options all with very healthy ingredients.  Most of them are not carefully designed with a dog or cat’s nutritional needs in mind.  Species appropriate means that the ingredients we select, our formulations and the things we avoid all support the nutritional needs of your dog or cat.  Each species has unique needs and designing treats to support them is our central focus.

Why are your Pure Meat treat packages labeled for both Dogs and Cats?

The simplicity and single ingredient nature of our products make this possible. Meat is the ideal treat for both dogs and cats and far more nutritionally appropriate than typical grain based treats. In keeping with our “Simple is Best” theme, what could be simpler than having one bag of treats to use for both your dog and cat!

Are your products quality tested?

Each batch of product is submitted for micro testing prior to being used in production.  If a batch fails it never makes our production facility and is disposed of.  We test for:

Yeast

Mold

Salmonella

E. Coli

Coliforms (harmful bacteria)

Staphylococcus aureus

Where are your treats made? Where do your ingredients come from?

Production of our freeze dried treats is all done in the USA in one of three facilities
using USDA inspected human grade meats.  Production of our biscuits, Comforts, is done in Illinois.  Production of deVour and Tail Mix are done in our own facility in Massachusetts.  Packaging of all products is done in our own facility in Western Massachusetts.

The non meat ingredients we use in our products are all sourced in the USA.  The meats used in our products are all raised in the United States with two exceptions. We use Cervena Venison in our pure meat line which is sourced from New Zealand.  We use Cervena Venison because it's the highest quality venison in the world. We also use Argentinean Beef in our pure meat line because we believe it to be a superior source of free range grass fed beef.

Our salmon fillet and cod are both wild caught, not farm-raised.

How are your treats processed?

Whole Life Pure Meat Treats are freeze-dried by the same facilities that freeze dry foods for human consumption and therefore are under strict USDA inspection and supervision.

What do you mean by “single ingredient”?

There is literally only one ingredient, protein. Nothing else is added.

What is freeze drying?

"Freeze-drying" is a unique process that provides product characteristics that cannot be achieved with any other food processing method. We start by using fresh or cooked foods then flash freeze them in a special vacuum chamber that reaches -50°F. As low-level heat is applied (much less than dehydrating), the ice crystals evaporate without going back to the liquid phase. This process, called "sublimation", removes approximately 98% of the moisture and prevents the food from spoiling-- the ultimate long term storage.

Why are freeze dried treats better for my animal than other kinds of treats?

Freeze-drying provides very unique benefits and advantages over other food processing methods. Frozen foods maintain their fresh flavor, but they must remain frozen. Dehydrated and canned foods are shelf-stable, but their high-temperature processing reduces their flavor, texture, color, and nutrients. Freeze-drying combines the best of these methods--it locks in the freshness, color, original shape, texture, and aroma of frozen food while providing the shelf-stable convenience of canned or dehydrated food.

What is the shelf life?

Beef, chicken, cod, salmon, venison and liver have a shelf life of one year. Lamb and turkey have a shelf life of 6 months. Comforts and devour both 1 year.  You do not need to refrigerate any of our treats.  Freshness can be maintained by keeping them in a cool and dry place, in our bags using the zip lock to keep the bag air tight. Bags with a clear window should be kept out of direct sunlight.
