How are your products quality tested?

Each ingredient is submitted for micro testing prior to being brought into our facility. Once freeze dried, a random sample is pulled daily from every batch we produce. That finished product is held in quarantine until results are returned from our lab indicating that the product is free from any contaminants. We currently test for:

  • • Salmonella
  • • E. Coli
  • • Staphylococcus aureus
  • • Listeria

Are your products the same in your bags packaged for dogs as they are in your bags packaged for cats?

Yes, our products are single ingredient, made from pure meat or fish and appropriate for both dogs and cats. Although both dogs and cats can eat any of our treats, some flavors are less popular with cats, which is why you won’t find every flavor we make in a cat specific bag. We package our treats in separate bags marked for dogs and cats to make them easier to display and to create less confusion on store shelves.

Where do your ingredients come from?

Whole Life pioneered the concept of Farm to Friend. We purchase all of our ingredients from farmers and fisherman we know and work with directly. Our treats are all freeze dried in our own state of the art manufacturing facility in the beautiful mountains of the Berkshires in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. All of our ingredients are sourced in the USA from the highest quality producers in the human food industry. We do not purchase any ingredients from pet industry raw materials suppliers—EVER.

Where are your treats produced and packaged?

All of our products are freeze dried and packaged by our staff in our own state of the art facility in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

What is the shelf life?

All our products are dated to be good for 18 months. You do not need to refrigerate any of our treats. Freshness can be maintained by keeping them in a cool and dry place, in our bags using the zip lock to keep the bag air tight. Bags with a clear window should be kept out of direct sunlight.

Why Raw Venison?

Raw feeding is wildly popular and in response to that trend in healthy "back to basics"? feeding, we created a raw option. We chose venison because we feel that it is the safest meat to produce in a raw format. Our venison is butchered in a USDA facility and rigorously tested for any harmful bacteria.

What is freeze drying?

"Freeze-drying" is the purest process that exists for making pet treats. It is a unique process that provides product characteristics that cannot be achieved with any other food processing method. The process starts by flash freezing meat or fish in a special vacuum chamber that reaches -50 to -60F or below. As low-level heat is applied (much less than dehydrating), the ice crystals evaporate. This process, called "sublimation", removes approximately 98% of the moisture, preserving the product in its natural state without the use of any chemicals, additives or preservatives. Freeze drying allows our products to maintain their nutritional integrity without any loss of essential vitamins, minerals, essential fats or any other characteristic they had prior to being freeze dried.

How are your treats processed?

Like everything we do, our process is as simple as it gets.

Our fish

All of our fish is wild caught and shipped directly to Boston where its cleaned, cubed and flash frozen by our fish supplier, Red’s Best. There are no additives, chemicals or preservatives used at any step in the process. Product is then shipped directly to our facility where it is freeze dried and packaged in house by our staff.

Our meats
All of our meats, with the exception of venison are shipped directly from our farmers to a USDA human food facility that cuts, slices or cubes them, then pre-cooks them by either steaming or roasting. The meats are then flash frozen and shipped to our facility where they are freeze dried and packaged in house by our staff.

Our Venison

Our venison is cubed in a USDA facility at the farm, then flash frozen raw and shipped to us directly where it is freeze dried and packaged by our staff. Our venison is our only raw option that is never cooked.

Our Cheese
Our cheese is produced in New York State, then shipped fresh to our facility where it is flash frozen and immediately freeze dried and packaged in house by our staff.

Our Sweet Potato

Our certified organic sweet potatoes are harvested at the peak of freshness, steamed, cubed and flash frozen on the farm, then shipped directly to us where they are freeze dried and packaged in house by our staff.

What do you mean by "species appropriate"?

There are thousands of natural treat options all with very healthy ingredients. Most of them are not designed with a dog or cat’s instinctual or biological needs in mind. Dogs and cats have very different nutritional needs than people. For us, a varied diet including high fiber and low fat is essential. For a dog or cat a diet rich in animal protein and fat and virtually void of fiber or filler is essential. This is especially true with cats that are true carnivores.

This is made very confusing by manufacturers that make pet food and treats that reflect human nutritional requirements. They contain non nutritious glutens and filler and stray from what Mother Nature designed for your pet to thrive on. Species appropriate means that the ingredients we select, our formulations and the things we avoid all support the instinctual and biological needs of your dog or cat. Making treats that taste great and embrace those needs is our central focus.

Are your meats cooked or raw?

All of our meats are pre-cooked prior to being freeze dried with the exception of venison. We use either gentle steaming or low temperature roasting which produces a superior finished product in texture, color and especially taste. Freeze drying does not "cook" food. It only extracts moisture at very low temperatures. For this reason, we pre-cook all of our poultry at a higher temperature of 165°F to ensure the highest level of safety for you and your family.

Why are freeze dried treats better for my pet than other kinds of treats?

Freeze-drying provides very unique benefits and advantages over other food processing methods. Frozen foods maintain their fresh flavor, but they must remain frozen. Dehydrated and canned foods are shelf-stable, but their high-temperature processing reduces their flavor, texture, color, and nutrients. Freeze-drying combines the best of these methods--it locks in the freshness, color, original shape, texture, and aroma of frozen food while providing the shelf-stable convenience of canned or dehydrated food.
